International Women's Day Historic All Female Crew Event 8 March 2025

On March 8th, 2025 – Tasmania's iconic replica tall ship, Lady Nelson, embarked on a groundbreaking voyage to celebrate International Women's Day and the courage and capability of women at sea. For the first time, she set sail under female leadership with an all-female crew.

This event not only showcased the incredible skills of our female sailors, it highlighted the progress towards gender equality, and importantly honoured the remarkable contributions of women throughout maritime history.

A Voyage Through Time and Progress:

The Lady Nelson has always been a ship rich with tales from history, yet this journey stood as a true reflection of our progress. In the early 19th century, the idea of an all-female crew would have been unimaginable. Women aboard ships, such as the original Lady Nelson, were typically passengers - whether as convicts, wives, children, or servants.  Their roles limited by the conventions of their time. Reflecting on this legacy, one of our ship historians, Mal Riley, estimates that about 15 to 20% of contemporary Tasmanian women may trace their ancestry back to passengers of the Lady Nelson. It's an incredible thought and one that links us directly to the courage and resilience in our past.

Celebrating Women in Maritime:

This special IWD sail connected the present to the past, drawing parallels between the pioneering spirit of the women who once travelled on the Lady Nelson and the modern-day crew who now command it. It was a powerful reminder of the progress made and of the possible adventures that lie ahead.

With sails set and glasses in hand our Master Astrid Wilson, spoke about the day; "We are immensely proud to host this historic sail. This voyage isn't just about celebrating history or International Women's Day; it's a big step in recognising women's contributions to sailing and inspiring the next generation of female sailors. We hope it will encourage young women to go after their dreams and make their mark in the maritime world."

The event consisted of two 90-minute trips navigating the stunning waters of Hobart's harbour. The weather pixies were kind and oh boy did Hobart do us proud; the day was crystal clear, warm with light winds and calm waters. The first sail was serenaded off the wharf by the inspirational female choir “Up She Rises”, we welcomed aboard an ABC News crew and other media representatives in addition to members of the public.

The second sail was an invitation only event where we were joined by our patron, The Honourable Barbara Baker, Governor of Tasmania, and a stellar guest list of significant women from all facets of our Tasmanian community - education, community leaders, commerce, government, Not for Profits, Channel 7 News and ABC Radio. The crew was excited to share their love of this particular sailing discipline and we were delighted that so many guests were keen to roll up their sleeves and grab a line or take the wheel.

Safe to say, it was an unforgettable experience for all aboard and we thank our generous sponsors, Porters Liquor, Officeworks, Office National, Hobart Signarama, and Dan Murphy’s for helping us celebrate in such style.

But most all, we were totally overwhelmed by the way our event captured the imagination and notice of so many folks. Post the event we received hundreds of beautiful messages and congratulations from all over Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the US.

It was a HUGE, proud day for the little ship we all love so well!!
