I am 14 years old and attend school in Hobart. I am writing to express my wholehearted support for the Lady Nelson’s Youth Development Program. I’ve been fortunate to have been part of two Lady Nelson Youth Adventure trips in 2023.
I simply had an amazing time. It was transformative and I came home with crew volunteer forms and a new found passion; but most importantly, a circle of new friends I am still in touch with. I would love you to understand how extraordinary these 5-day voyages really are…
Clearly, they bring together young people from different backgrounds which promotes understanding, inclusiveness and team building. What I was not expecting was how much it would develop my confidence, sense of resilience / responsibility and the courage to truly step outside of my comfort zone.
Is it easy? Not always. Is it challenging? Yes: physically, mentally & emotionally. Is it worthwhile? 100%. Thanks to the super supportive and caring environment onboard, you really are inspired to attempt and achieve things way beyond your wildest expectations. All whilst having so, so much fun! I can honestly say that I came back to land a different person - certainly with a clearer view of who I am, and a new found self belief that with courage and hard work I can chase down my dreams. Since then, I have sailed on the Lady Nelson every other weekend and am proud to have nearly completed my Deckhand competencies. I have set myself a goal of becoming a Master of a Tall ship. It will be challenging but I am determined!
Has The Lady Nelson’s Youth Program changed my life? I can tell you it genuinely has. Whilst I realise everyone’s outcomes and benefits are different to mine; I would truly love as many young people as possible to have the opportunity to take advantage of what this amazing program can offer you. The Lady Nelson Youth Development Program has the potential to make a real difference in the lives and outlook of young people.
I believe that The Lady Nelson should continue to run and hopefully expand this program as their expertise, compassion, and dedication to providing these amazingly unique opportunities is a much needed resource for today’s young people to access. Life can be scary and confusing; courage, resilience and confidence are great super powers to have at your fingertips! I am proud to support
